Finally, in the most recent series Star Trek: Voyager and Star Trek: Deep Space 9, the crews are on their own. Voyager is adrift in a world with no little navigational marks, wondering how to get back home. Deep Space 9, no longer in production, was about a lonely outpost, where the crew had to rely on one another and react to constantly shifting alliances throughout the universe. Voyager and Deep Space Nine are, essentially, start-ups. Like the crews of these shows, geeks today feel unthehered and yet full of possibility. The geek with star-up syndrome s conditioned to break off on his own, explore uncharted territory, and reap great rewards while making great sacrifices.
