Interesante propuesta del filósofo y escritor Julian Baggini. ¿Cuál es la filosofía detrás de los titulares?, o casi más bien, ¿Cómo aplicar las reglas de la filosofía a nuestra realidad actual?.

Ya simplemente por el título el libro tiene toda mi atención. Después de leer la contraportada aún se me muestra mucho más interesante. Un pequeño ensayo de por qué diversas culturas a lo largo del tiempo han creado diversas tradiciones que hoy en día nos parecen chocantes.

Ayer por la tardé asistí a la presentación del libro Espejos por parte de su autor, Eduardo Galeano. Era la primera vez que había ido a una de sus charlas, pero mis expectativas eran altas por lo bien que me habían hablado de ellas amigas y amigos. La verdad es que la disfruté mucho. Aquí tenéis alguna de sus frases que apunté mientras él hablaba

A Cristo no se le pasó por la cabeza fundar una empresa.
Los del norte tienen la mala costumbre de pasar examen a los del sur, reflejo colonial.
Los amos del mundo hacen el negocio de la guerra y velan por la paz.
Lo mejor que el mundo tiene es la cantidad de mundos que contiene.

La última frase no la apunté yo, sino que la saqué de La Caja de Hilos.

Hoy me pasé por la librería Follas Novas, en Santiago de Compostela, donde el autor firmaba libros. Le gustó bastante que hubiese marcado con colores todos los textos que me habían gustado

La ocasión también me brindó la oportunidad de conocer en persona a Soledad, creadora de La Caja de Hilos.

Otro libro sobre el sistema político de Estados Unidos, en este caso hablando de como la derecha consigue convencer de que ideas que no benefician al pueblo (el americano en este caso), este le vote. Supongo que lo que comentan se podrá aplicar a otras partes del mundo.

Yo de Proust nunca he leído nada, que yo me acuerde. Tal vez este pequeño ensayo sobre su vida y obra me ayude a crearme un interés en este clásico autor. A lo mejor me hacen convertirme en un gafapasta. Proust era uno de los requisitos que se mencionaban en varias discusiones con una amiga y unos amigos el otro día.

De Julian Baggini solamente he leído Atheims: A very short introduction, un libro que me gusto mucho, principalmente por la forma de explicar el ateísmo y por que coincido en casi todas las cosas que plantea. Este libro que tengo ahora en mis manos, el autor plantea problemas filosóficos y sus soluciones a ellos, tiene pinta de ser bastante interesante.

From Zeno’s paradox to Nietzsche’s theory of eternal recurrence, via the poppadom paradox and Plato’s cave, Baggini asks if it is right to punish people for what they haven’t yet done, how can we tell whether we are awake or dreaming, and whether virtual sex counts as infidelity. Drawing oncolourful examples form films such as An American Werewolf in London and Minority Report, as well as television, literature and philosophical classics, this book makes philosophy not only mind-stretching but also entertaining.

Desde luego este libro de Sam Harris no deja indiferentes a nadie. Obviamente no deja indiferentes a creyentes, pero tampoco a no creyentes, dado que en mi opinión algunas de sus ideas son un poco radícales para mi propio gusto.

What can be asserted without evidence can also be dismissed without evidence

El autor considera que la religión en su forma extrema, llevada a cabo por muchas personas en este planeta, puede ser una de las causas de la destrucción de la raza humana (es especialmente crítico con el Islam que usa de ejemplo). Pero más curioso me pareció su argumento de que para poder terminar con extremistas primero hay que evitar a los moderados. Según su punto de vista, las personas que son religiosas de forma moderada son las que impiden que se pueda actuar de forma efectiva contra los extremistas.

To be an ethical realist is to believe that in ethics, as in physics, there are thruths waiting to be discoverd and thus we can be right or wrong in our beliefs about them

Es interesante el análisis que hace de la fe religiosa. La define como la voluntad de esperar a que las evidencias confirmen nuestras creencias. Esto permite a una persona normal considerar ideas alocadas y llamarlas sagradas. Concluye que aunque la fe ayudase a muchas personas hiciesen cosas buenas, no quiere decir que necesariamente sea buena.

Más interesante aún es la introducción del concepto de espiritualidad de forma filosófica y alejado de la religión. Aunque esto le ha llevado a críticas por otras personas ateas. Pero como él dice, ser capaz de aceptar que podemos estar equivocados en lo que creemos es la clave para no autodestruirnos.

The problem that I arise in the book is none other than the problem of dogma itself

Si con algo tengo que quedarme del libro sin duda es un pequeño párrafo del epílogo. Simplemente tenemos que darnos cuenta de la gente que esta a nuestro alrededor, todas esas personas ven a tener a seres queridos que morirán, y sufrirán por ello, ellas/os también morirán, nosotras/os moriremos y por eso mismo, por esa mortalidad que nos define, es por lo que se tiene que intentar ser buena persona.

El año pasado comencé a leer libros sobre biología centrados en genética, especialmente en explicar el origen de la especie humana. Este tema biológico que en un principio no me parecía tan interesante me enganchó del todo. Ahora llega el momento de añadir conocimientos más generales sobre el tema.

Si os interesa conocer la historia de Apple desde sus comienzos hasta hace un par de añitos este es vuestro libro. Tal vez no abarque todo en el detalle que alguna gente le gustaría, pero es que en 300 páginas es difícil de abarcar los 30 y poco años de historia de la compañía. Desde que Steve Wozniak y Steve Jobs se conocen, pasando por la marcha de ambos de la compañía y el regreso del hijo pródigo, Jobs, a Apple, todo esta aquí.

El autor desde luego tiene un gran conocimiento de esta parte de la historia de la informática, aunque tal vez le falte ese hilo conducto que hacía que no pudiese parar de leer Fire in the Valley. De todas formas se disfruta bastante bien. Además, incluye una gran cantidad de timelines sobre diferentes partes de la historia de la compañía. Ayudan bastante a la hora de hacerse una idea mental de cuando y cuanto tiempo tardan en suceder las cosas.

Por otro lado, a parte de narrar cosas sobre Apple, también se marcha un poco por las ramas. Cuenta los negocios de Steve Jobs cuando no trabaja allí, cosas que hizo después Steve Wozniak, o como Jef Raskin consiguió construir su ordenador, el que iba a ser inicialmente el Macintosh para Cannon, aunque después tuviese una vida muy corta.

El pasado 23 de Abril fue el día del libro, y a pesar que mi economía no iba muy bien este mes, por tradición, decidí comprar un libro. Mi intención desde el principio era comprar un libro de Eduardo Galeano, pero todo lo que veía por la librería eran una o dos obras de las que ya tenía. Con el libro de otro autor en la mano y acercándome a la caja, una chica tira sin querer unos cuantos libros, ejemplares de Espejos, el último libro del autor, que lo tenían expuesto en otro lado para promocionarlo y yo ni lo había visto al entrar. Así que el azar me jugó una buena pasada y compré lo que había ido a buscar en un principio.

Por cierto, Galeano va a dar una charla en Santiago de Compostela presentando el libro.

Vale, es cierto, de mi cumpleaños ya pasó más de un mes, pero es lo que tiene que te compren las cosas por correo, llegan cuando les da la gana y con retraso.

Ya llevo leído una buena porción del libro, y aunque me reservaré unas opiniones más extensas para más adelante, hay que decir que el libro me esta gustando mucho. Si queréis conocer la historia de Apple, este es un buen comienzo. De todas formas, en 300 páginas no se pueden contar de forma detallada la vida de una compañía que ya tiene sus 30 añitos, y puede que algunas historias os dejen con ganas de saber más detalles.

Después de que Sam Harris escribiese su novela The End of Faith comenzó a recibir un montón de correos de gente expresando su rechazo por lo que había escrito. Muchos de ellos citaban la biblia como fuente de referencia de por qué se equivocaba, y muchos otros eran de todo menos amables cartas expresando una opinión contraria. Para contestar todo aquellos que le echaban en cara decidió escribir un pequeño libro o carta, Letter to a Christian Nation, especialmente dirigido a la derecha cristiana de Estados Unidos (supongo que la mayoría de la gente que le escribió cartas entran dentro de esta categoría).

Como la biblia era usada como argumento en contra a sus ideas gran parte del texto se dedica a analizar este libro. Muestra ejemplos donde unos escritos se contradicen entre otros. Escritos que fueron utlizados para justificar cosas como la esclavitud o la santa inquisición. Le parece curioso que se use el sentido común para discernir los mensajes importantes en la biblia de los que no lo son para crear la “moral cristiana” y después se diga que realmente la biblia es la que te indica las cosas que son morales y cuales no.

Y hablando de moral califica que esta moral es dudosa. Cosas como que es mejor moralmente promover el no uso del preservativo mientras en zonas como Africa mucha gente muere de sida. Oponerse en contra a la investigación en células madre cuando puede ser la clave para curar un sin fin de enfermedades. Y obviamente, mientras se habla de estos últimos temas relacionados con la ciencia, se toca la famosa teoría del diseño inteligente, teoría que creen un gran número de personas en Estados Unidos.

Para finalizar con el tema de la moralidad se afirma que realmente no hace falta tener o creer en un Dios para hacer el bien. La gente no creyente por no tener un Dios que lo guíe por el camino correcto no quiere decir que sea malvada o carente de moral, eso es una falsa creencia.

Cómo ya comenté anteriormente, aunque el libro pone “Cómo mentir con estadísticas,” realmente ayuda al lector a ver los errores más típicos en ellas, ya sean por error de la persona que expone los datos o por que lo haga de forma intencionada.

Es curioso que a pesar de que el libro tiene más de 50 años sigue siendo igual de útil. Los distintos datos a mostrar y los errores o engaños que se pueden hacer con ellos siguen siendo los mismos. Además, las preguntas que hay que hacerse ante un análisis estadístico o una gráfica siguen siendo igual de válidas antes como ahora.

Capítulo tras capítulo el autor toca un tema concreto en los problemas que puede presentar cualquier estadística. Problemas como que la recogida de los datos para una estadística esta mal hecha, ya sea por que se ha hecho un muestreo incorrecto para lo que se quiere preguntar, las preguntas equivocadas. En este proceso de recogida de datos, muchas veces no se tiene en cuenta que toda medida tiene un error asociado, si este es significativo, puede hacer que sea imposible llegar a ningún tipo de conclusión.

La palabra “promedio” es otro de los términos que ataca directamente el autor. Un promedio puede ocultar el tipo de medida que se esta realizando, ya sea esta una media, una mediana o una moda. En muchas ocasiones, escoger una o otro puede lleva a conclusiones muy lejanas de la realidad. Esto también pasa cuando la estadística o análisis se hacen con insuficientes datos o simplemente mostrando resultados parciales. Y para resultados parciales es casi mejor no hablar de lo que se pueden hacer con las gráficas para distorsionar completamente la realidad.

Las conclusiones finales del libro giran entorno a quién hace este tipo de cosas por error y quién lo hace de forma consciente para conseguir vender algo o generar impresiones que no son ciertas. Tal vez esto último sea lo más peligroso y por lo que saber interpretar los datos que se nos presentan delante nuestra y decir que son dudosos o no es algo que deberíamos ser capaces de hacer.
