Ya hace tiempo comenté el proyecto de rodar una serie sobre la saga Canción de Hielo y Fuego. Muchas noticias no ha habido desde entonces, pero ahora resulta que HBO contará con la colaboración de la BBC para este proyecto. Realmente ambas cadenas se caracterizan por realizar series de calidad envidiable por cualquier otra productora.

La cosa está un pelín verde todavía. Van por el segundo borrador del piloto de la serie, pero la cosa promete. Particularmente siempre pensé que esta saga, la única forma de llevarla a la pantalla, sería a través de una serie de televisión, con películas es imposible.

Sobre este libro me enteré viendo el documental Revolution OS, donde una de las personas que salían entrevistas era precisamente el autor de este libro, Eric S. Raymond. Me pareció interesante lo que contaba, así que terminé comprando el libro.

Genome es una pequeña introducción al increíble mundo del genoma humano. Una introducción en 23 capítulos, uno por cada cromosoma. Pero realmente cada capítulo es una excusa para hablar de un tema relacionado con la genética, con tal de que el cromosoma tenga algo que ver remotamente con ese tema, al autor le vale.

Historias que van desde los problemas que hubo al principio para encajar las ideas de Mendel y Darwin. Hasta que se descubrió la existencia de los genes y que estos podían mutar, no cuadraban el hecho de evolucionar y el hecho de que tras varias generaciones una persona podía heredar aspectos de sus antepasados.

A pesar de que la parte histórica estuvo muy bien, me encantó más otros temas. Como que las primeras formas de vida estaban basadas en RNA, las cuales evolucionaron y empezaron a utilizar el ADN como una especie de archivo digital donde almacenar cosas útiles. Y tal vez por esto, es por lo que tenemos que ver el proceso evolutivo no a nivel de especie, sino a nivel genético. Son los genes los que intentan propagarse de una generación a otra, los seres vivos, animales o plantas, son simplemente una forma eficiente de hacerlo.

Esta evolución a nivel genético puede explicar mucho de lo que se denomina ADN basura. Trozos de ADN que en un principio no valen para nada pero que están en nuestro código genético. Muchos de estos trozos tienen una única misión en su vida, asegurarse de que existan el máximo número de copias de si mismos en la cadena genética. Son muy eficientes en autoreplicarse, copiando porciones de si mismos en RNA para después volverse a insertar en otro punto del genoma. Este comportamiento es el mimso que siguen los retrovirus. El resto del ADN tiene que “vigilar” que estos trozos no muy útiles no empiecen a destruir porciones útiles para la vida humana.

El libro toca muchos otros aspectos relacionados con la genética, pero simplemente voy a destacar uno más que me llamaron la atención. Toda célula en nuestro cuerpo tiene una función que le permite cometer suicido. Cuando termina su vida útil, se supone que la propia célula tiene que activar esta función de forma “voluntaria.” Cuando este mecanismo falla, es cuando puede evolucionar en cáncer, la célula no muere y continúa reproduciéndose, y sus células hijas también fallan en el mismo punto. El propio cuerpo tiene mecanismos que, si funcionan, pueden detectar esto y atacar a las células para obligarlas a “suicidarse,” estos mecanismos de detección en caso que fallen, pueden ser inducidos a activarse a través de quimioterapia, siempre y cuando se pille el cáncer a tiempo.

El libro cuanta muchas más cosas, pero es imposible tratarlas en esta pequeña revisión del mismo…

Puede que este libro lo deba leer ahora, que no tengo nada claro lo que hacer con mi vida. En un principio tengo demasiados intereses, tal y como indican el libro, pero probablemente falle en que se me dean bien. Pero bueno, nunca no he tenido claro que hacer de mí mismo, y por el momento ya he llegado sano y salvo hasta los 30 años, muy mal no lo debo estar haciendo de todas formas.

La semana pasada terminé el libro Espejos de Eduardo Galeano. Y creo que fue una de las mejores formas que tuve de terminar un libro, dado que coincidió con la visita del autor a Santiago de Compostela para hablar del mismo. Sus comentarios sobre su más reciente obra me ayudaron a comprender lo que él quería contar con este libro.

Un libro de estilo al que nos tiene acostumbrados Galeano. Relatos cortos que nos narran, en su forma peculiar, un trocito de la historia humana. Esto último es característica principal del libro, habla de la humanidad en sí, esa que viaja en ese pequeño planeta y que contiene muchos mundos y una diversidad que la hacen tan especial. Pero no son las historias típicas, más bien son las historias que se pueden ver entrelíneas de lo que aparece en otros libros, son las historias de esas personas de las que habitualmente nadie habla.

El libro nos cuenta como todos somos emigrantes que salimos en algún momento de Africa, de donde partieron nuestros antepasados a viajar y colonizar todo el mundo. Tocando todo tipo de civilizaciones, ya sean europeas, africanas, asiáticas, americanas… Desde el comienzo de la historia hasta nuestros días, en unas escasas 300 páginas.

Historias de lo que Galeano denomina la mitad negada de la humanidad, las mujeres. Historias que denuncian al machismo y sus justificaciones a la largo de la historia. Historias que denuncian a la esclavitud y a sus justificaciones a lo largo de la historia. Historias de pueblos de colonizaciones injustas… y muchas más denuncias en la línea habitual del autor.

Leyendo de que va el libro uno realmente empieza a pensar en la película Gattaca. La idea que plantea el libro es la misma, un futuro donde puedas escoger que genes y cuales no llevarán tus hijos. Curioso, nunca pensé que el tema de la genética me iba a interesar tanto, este ya es el cuarto libro que pasa por mis manos.

Ya simplemente por el título el libro tiene toda mi atención. Después de leer la contraportada aún se me muestra mucho más interesante. Un pequeño ensayo de por qué diversas culturas a lo largo del tiempo han creado diversas tradiciones que hoy en día nos parecen chocantes.

Ayer por la tardé asistí a la presentación del libro Espejos por parte de su autor, Eduardo Galeano. Era la primera vez que había ido a una de sus charlas, pero mis expectativas eran altas por lo bien que me habían hablado de ellas amigas y amigos. La verdad es que la disfruté mucho. Aquí tenéis alguna de sus frases que apunté mientras él hablaba

A Cristo no se le pasó por la cabeza fundar una empresa.
Los del norte tienen la mala costumbre de pasar examen a los del sur, reflejo colonial.
Los amos del mundo hacen el negocio de la guerra y velan por la paz.
Lo mejor que el mundo tiene es la cantidad de mundos que contiene.

La última frase no la apunté yo, sino que la saqué de La Caja de Hilos.

Hoy me pasé por la librería Follas Novas, en Santiago de Compostela, donde el autor firmaba libros. Le gustó bastante que hubiese marcado con colores todos los textos que me habían gustado

La ocasión también me brindó la oportunidad de conocer en persona a Soledad, creadora de La Caja de Hilos.

Otro libro sobre el sistema político de Estados Unidos, en este caso hablando de como la derecha consigue convencer de que ideas que no benefician al pueblo (el americano en este caso), este le vote. Supongo que lo que comentan se podrá aplicar a otras partes del mundo.

Yo de Proust nunca he leído nada, que yo me acuerde. Tal vez este pequeño ensayo sobre su vida y obra me ayude a crearme un interés en este clásico autor. A lo mejor me hacen convertirme en un gafapasta. Proust era uno de los requisitos que se mencionaban en varias discusiones con una amiga y unos amigos el otro día.

De Julian Baggini solamente he leído Atheims: A very short introduction, un libro que me gusto mucho, principalmente por la forma de explicar el ateísmo y por que coincido en casi todas las cosas que plantea. Este libro que tengo ahora en mis manos, el autor plantea problemas filosóficos y sus soluciones a ellos, tiene pinta de ser bastante interesante.

From Zeno’s paradox to Nietzsche’s theory of eternal recurrence, via the poppadom paradox and Plato’s cave, Baggini asks if it is right to punish people for what they haven’t yet done, how can we tell whether we are awake or dreaming, and whether virtual sex counts as infidelity. Drawing oncolourful examples form films such as An American Werewolf in London and Minority Report, as well as television, literature and philosophical classics, this book makes philosophy not only mind-stretching but also entertaining.

Desde luego este libro de Sam Harris no deja indiferentes a nadie. Obviamente no deja indiferentes a creyentes, pero tampoco a no creyentes, dado que en mi opinión algunas de sus ideas son un poco radícales para mi propio gusto.

What can be asserted without evidence can also be dismissed without evidence

El autor considera que la religión en su forma extrema, llevada a cabo por muchas personas en este planeta, puede ser una de las causas de la destrucción de la raza humana (es especialmente crítico con el Islam que usa de ejemplo). Pero más curioso me pareció su argumento de que para poder terminar con extremistas primero hay que evitar a los moderados. Según su punto de vista, las personas que son religiosas de forma moderada son las que impiden que se pueda actuar de forma efectiva contra los extremistas.

To be an ethical realist is to believe that in ethics, as in physics, there are thruths waiting to be discoverd and thus we can be right or wrong in our beliefs about them

Es interesante el análisis que hace de la fe religiosa. La define como la voluntad de esperar a que las evidencias confirmen nuestras creencias. Esto permite a una persona normal considerar ideas alocadas y llamarlas sagradas. Concluye que aunque la fe ayudase a muchas personas hiciesen cosas buenas, no quiere decir que necesariamente sea buena.

Más interesante aún es la introducción del concepto de espiritualidad de forma filosófica y alejado de la religión. Aunque esto le ha llevado a críticas por otras personas ateas. Pero como él dice, ser capaz de aceptar que podemos estar equivocados en lo que creemos es la clave para no autodestruirnos.

Si con algo tengo que quedarme del libro sin duda es un pequeño párrafo del epílogo. Simplemente tenemos que darnos cuenta de la gente que esta a nuestro alrededor, todas esas personas ven a tener a seres queridos que morirán, y sufrirán por ello, ellas/os también morirán, nosotras/os moriremos y por eso mismo, por esa mortalidad que nos define, es por lo que se tiene que intentar ser buena persona.
